Dad's days in Cyprus were marked by tragedy. Shortly after giving birth to the couple's fourth child, Charles Christopher Jewell, Jean fell gravely ill and passed away suddenly on August 27, 1961. Just two weeks and one day later, little Charles Christopher died of acute pneumonia. Heartbroken, Dad returned to Fairfax with his children, his two-year tour of duty in Cyprus cut short. Less than a year later, our peripatetic father headed back to Japan for his second assignment to the FBIS Okinawa Bureau. The move was especially difficult for the children, who were experiencing their third major uprooting in less than two years and were still grappling with the loss of their mother. |
