In 1972, after three years in London, Dad headed back to Okinawa, this time as deputy bureau chief. His third tour in Okinawa in 18 years, and his sixth overseas posting overall with the FBIS, would be his last. In May 1974, shortly before Dad returned to the United States, John Chandlee, the Okinawa Bureau chief, wrote on Dad's evaluation: "Considering the various GS-14's with whom I have worked, and remembering that I have given an overall 'outstanding' only twice in my 12 years as bureau chief or staff officer, I cannot give Jewell less than an 'outstanding' for the work he has done the past year. This bureau will long be in his debt." Back in Fairfax in 1974, Dad found himself commuting 2 1/2 hours a day to and from work by bus. In December of that year, he wrote: "The lure of retirement becomes stronger all the time." |
